Aftra-SAG tiff
The tiff between AFTRA and SAG took an interesting turn over the weekend on Saturday March 29, 2008. After agreeing on a united front with SAG in contract talks with producers, AFTRA suddenly withdrew from the Phase 1 agreement over claims SAG was attempting a jurisdictional raid of an AFTRA soap opera. SAG was quick to report no such thing happened in their version of events, while AFTRA reported information that appears quite contrary. Now whether or not SAG did indeed commit the offense, this sudden withdrawal of AFTRA's cooperation with SAG is certainly justified in light of all the previous provocative actions undertaken by SAG via the suspect leadership of Alan Rosenberg, Doug Allen and the Membership First slate. This team of "leaders" has worked continuously to undermine the relevance of AFTRA ever since their successful sabotage of the merger effort that almost rightfully succeeded under Melissa Gilbert's SAG Presidency. Ironically, with all the tax incentives being created in various states across the country, it is Hollywood that is losing its relevance - as a film location of choice. The warm clime and sunshine of LA is stepping aside for new film, lighting, and editing technologies that have made it possible to shoot a film anywhere, at anytime, any place in the world. It is time for the Hollywood-centric leadership to realize filmmaking is a world-wide industry now. If American actors and filmmakers are to maintain their position as the best of the best in the film industry, Hollywood has to wake up to the notion that all actors in the United States are relevant to our success and growth, not just those who happen to have an LA zip code. |
